The 2007 movie the Great Debaters staring and directed by Denzel Washington is a model of revolutionary teachers and liberators of the minds of black people. It shows teachers and educators in love with their passion to educate, inspire, motivate, and lift up a whole new generation of thinkers, leaders, and contributors to the Black community and society at large. They did this by diligent study coupled with community engagement and a fearlessness in the demonstration of their learning, convictions, and vision of a better world in the face of challenges and injustice. And by their instructions and examples they helped produce students that were world changers with ability to overturn systems of oppression and tare down barriers that held generations of their people as second class citizens. They help building a new society of confident Black people.
This change was produced by teachers, men and women, who believed in what they taught, what they studied, and from what they and their ancestors experienced. They believed and taught their students that to live your passion or calling for your people and the needs of the times is the seed of greatness. And that seed when combined with the pure water of true knowledge germinates into a mighty tree where all God's creatures have a place of shelter and nourishment.
