The anchor of our soul is Christ. But it's easy to generalize this statement to mean Christ the person only. In this generalization, if one knows the history and believes in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, then he is right with God or in good standing with God. This, however, is not the case. Just knowing the historical Jesus is not enough.
To understand why this is so, you would need to understand what Christ represent. In the gospel of John, the book opens with a clear definition of who Christ is, what his mission was, and what he represents. He is the eternal word called God, according to the scriptures, that proceed from God the Father. He is the literal spoken word of God, which is so powerful that it takes on a unique spirit or life on its own. Yet, it is in complete union with God the Father, for it is his very spoken word. The book of Isaiah 55:11 also states that God's word is spoken in order to accomplish the will or purposes of God. Its mission is to fulfil the prophecies and instructions of God in the earth and throughout the galaxies. Hence, all that is spoken by God will come to pass, because Christ or the word of God will bring it to pass. In fact, it was Christ at the foundation of the earth and the heavens who was that creative and powerful spirit that made all things as God the Father instructed him to do.
Christ is the eternal word of God. And the expectation of man's relation to the word of God is one of obedience according to the scriptures. Therefore, for Christ, who is the word of God, to be your soul's anchor you must obey him. Now, to obey him is not do what we think God might want us to do out of our own understanding or ideas of what is right or wrong. God has left man a clear document on what is just and right before Him in the Bible. He has caused this word to be transmuted from the spirit realm or the unseen world into our physical world where man dwells by sending the spirt of Christ into holy men and prophets to write it down in the books of the Bible for us (2 Peter 1:20,21). Starting with Moses, the man of God and a prince of the children of Israel, who was commanded by God to write down all the law, the judgments, instructions, and prophecy showed him in a book for the people to read continually for the intent that they may learn of their God, obey all his laws, and have faith in his prophecy concerning them and all mankind (Deut. 31:9-13). And finally with Christ, who straightly commanded all who would trust in God through his teaching of God's word that they should demonstrate their love of God by obeying the words written in the scripture (John 14:23-24). And if a man, he continued, would not obey the teaches of the scripture, then he does not truly love God or him- God's Messiah and son. Therefore, if Christ is the true anchor of one's soul, that soul is one who obeys God according to the scriptures as taught by his son-the word of God. If we say he is our anchor, we should obey him according to the word written in the Bible (John 7:37,38).
